Support Elder Committee efforts and complete the survey

The following survey was created to help Halifax Pride's Elder Committee identify ways to make the Halifax Pride Festival and Society more accessible to elder participation. We appreciate the input of all those who self-identify as elders, as your feedback will help direct the creation of new events and policies.

Should you wish to learn more about Halifax Pride, our activities, or ways to get involved, please do not hesitate to contact Elder Committee Lead, Patrick Maubert, at patrick@halifaxpride.com.

2018 Annual General Meeting

Halifax Pride will hold its 2018 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday, October 1, 2018 at the Halifax Central Library from 6:30 pm - 9 pm. The AGM is an annual meeting of the members of the Halifax Pride Society to review board reports, elect board members, and discuss society business.

In November 2017, the membership of the Halifax Pride society voted on substantial operational changes to the by-laws, including new membership criteria. Read the by-laws and review how they govern the society and the AGM here.

Members in attendance of the AGM will elect new board directors at the meeting. Those members interested in standing for election submitted their names and a brief bio to morgan@halifaxpride.com before September 16, 2018 to ensure notice to membership. Find the list of 2018 board nominees here.

Board members are expected to attend regular board meetings, and orientation and festival planning retreats. Review the proposed board meeting schedule for an indication of anticipated time commitment.

If you are interested in becoming more involved in the Halifax Pride Society or board of directors, but have questions, hesitations, or concerns, please reach out to morgan@halifaxpride.com.

At the AGM, the outgoing board of directors will present an annual report for review. The report will include 2018 financial statements, individual board reports, and a festival review. The report will be made available at halifaxpride.com after the meeting.

MEDIA RELEASE: 2018 Festival Launch

2018 Halifax Pride Festival Begins Today

K’jipuktuk (Halifax, N.S.) - Thursday, July 19 marks the official start to the Halifax Pride Festival, with events running July 19-29.

“We’re so excited to finally start the festival after months of preparation,” says Morgan Manzer, chair of the Halifax Pride board of directors. “For the past few years, we’ve concentrated on making this festival among the most accessible and community-focused in the country.”

That community focus can be found in Halifax Pride’s 2018 theme . This year’s festival emphasizes the message that pride is “Because of you” through photographs of members of Halifax’s 2SLGBTQ+ community.

Featured in among the festival guide and posters are several photos from The Magic Project’s Queer People are Magic: Pride Edition. Like their other art initiatives, the photoshoot captures empowerment and connects communities.

The Magic Project’s work using art and photography to create solidarity, and celebrate diverse identities, has made Halifax Pride’s “Because of you” campaign possible. “It is through the work of the community that pride happens every year,” says Adam Reid, executive director. “We strive to build a festival where our community can come together to celebrate, commemorate, and advocate.”

Some of the 2018 festival’s new events include the opening night Halifax Pride Comedy Show, The Katchup brunch on the Garrison Grounds, and a Humans vs. Zombies game for youth. The Dykes vs. Divas Softball Game, Garrison Grounds Mainstage Show, Evening Speaker Series, Queer Perspective Panels, and an expanded Gottingen Block Party are all returning to the festival. For a full line up of events, visits www.halifaxpride.com/schedule.

The Halifax Pride Parade will march on July 21 at 1 p.m.
