Mykel is a Non-Binary Two Spirt Mi’kmaq from the community of Eskasoni on the island of Unamaki in the Wabanaki Territory of Turtle Island. Mykel uses the pronouns Nekm in Indigenous spaces and They/them in non-indigenous space. Mykel is the current Executive Director of Pride Eskasoni, and is the Gender, Health and Wellness Navigator for the Wabanaki Two Spirit Alliance. Mykel has also been involved in multiple research roles for other Community centred organizations as well as Dalhousie Universities Engineering Department. Mykel is a graduate of Cape Breton University where they completed a Bachelor of Science with a focus on Biology and Chemistry. Mykel is actively engaged in becoming a student of medicine where they wish to pursue a position in Family Medicine. Most of Mykel’s research and community-based work has been centred around integration of knowledge from both Mi’kmaq traditional ways of knowing and non-Indigenous sciences. Mykel also is a active Registered Massage Therapist with the Massage Therapist Association of Nova Scotia and is the owner and operator of Mykel Denny Massage Therapy in the city of Sydney.

Mykel is also a Grandparent to Two Grandchildren, a parent to one and is also a pet parent to 3 cats and two dogs. When Mykel is not busy with their work life they love to spend time reading, teaching yoga, writing and learning new languages.
